With my first meeting as Club President under my belt, I thought I'd share a bit of insight about our evening. Last night saw the return of a lot of long-missed faces to the club — everyone was very happy to rekindle old acquaintences — and there were a few new faces in the crowd as well. Welcome everyone! Being the first meeting, it was admittedly a bit heavy on the "administrative" side as there were some things we absolutely had to take care of: introductions of the 2009 Club Executive, membership collection, announcements, financial update, and CAPCON update. Now with those things out of the way, future meetings will focus on the reason we are in this great hobby and club... MODELLING! One of the main reasons I joined the club, and later ran for President, was that I wanted to improve and broaden my skills as a modeller. After meeting the club members and seeing what they are capable of, I knew that I was in the right place. The friendly and good-natured membership is an absolute wealth of modelling skills and knowledge, and it is willing to pass on to anyone who is interested. This fact was shown by our first demonstration of the season; Graham Mansell gave an excellent demonstration on how to create quilted sound-proofing panels inside aircraft. The demonstration gave rise to some interesting "round table" discussions amongst the collected members. THIS is what the club is about... sharing thoughts, ideas, and skills. We have lots more planned for future meetings: more skills demonstrations, prolific guest speakers, movie nights, and other round-table discussions for everyone's enjoyment and benefit. We invite all members to join our discussion forum here on the site to bat around ideas and questions. CAPCON 2009 is shaping up well, though we cannot let up in our efforts to raise sponsorship. We would like to call on our membership to be our ambassadors in that respect. All help is very much appreciated to make CAPCON 2009 a success! For more information, see our CAPCON mini-site. This month's "adhoc" contest again showed the great skills of everyone that brought in models for our viewing enjoyment. We will shortly post the names of the winners. The membership drive will continue in future meetings for those who were unable to sign up last night. A yearly membership in IPMS Ottawa is only $15; there will be a 2-meeting grace period for membership sign-up. Membership brings great privileges and rewards such as inclusion in periodic draws. Stay tuned for news on the March 2009 meeting and more exciting stuff! |
