TRI   Triathlon ( )

A Triathlon entry is a group of three (3) models, each model being from a different division. A Triathlon entry is considered to be a single, standalone entry which must be displayed together in the Triathlon category area; the individual models cannot also be entered into separate categories.

Example of acceptable Triathlon entry:

  • airliner (Aerospace)
  • armoured tank (Military Vehicles/Ordnance)
  • submarine (Ship)

Example of unacceptable entry:

  • airliner (Aerospace)
  • helicopter (another Aerospace)
  • submarine (Ships)

Information about Special Categories

Scratchbuilt

Scratchbuilt models may incorporate minor parts from other kits, however the majority of the model must consist of modeller-designed and/or modeller-fabricated parts.  In-progress photos and extras will not be allowed on the table, but they must be available to the Judges upon request.

For more information about 3D-printed items in the Scratchbuilt categories, see more information HERE.

Major Conversion

Entries in a "Major Conversion" category must represent a version different from that provided by the basic kit.

The conversion must contain significant structural modifications to the basic kit, involving extensive changes in contour and/or configuration. These changes must be the sole work of the Entrant.

Simple conversions or conversions using commercially-available aftermarket parts must be entered in standard categories. Combining differing available models (aka 'kit-bashing') is not considered a ‘major conversion.’ The Entrant must detail the conversion changes made to the basic kit on the Entry Form; photos and extras will not be allowed on the table, but must be available to the Judges upon request.

Dioramas and Vignettes

The Dioramas & Vignettes division contains different genre-specific categories. The number of figures included does not constitute a vignette or diorama.

Dioramas

In a Diorama, the primary focus is on the ability to tell a story; the composition of elements within the diorama must support the telling of the story. The quality of the figures, vehicles, and other elements will also be considered.

If a Diorama has multiple vehicles of different genres (for example, aerospace + armour), it is the responsibility of the Entrant to select the appropriate Diorama category.

Vignettes

A vignette is comprised of - at minimum - a base and figure that presents a historical or environmental setting. A vehicle may be included as long as it adds to the setting.

Vignettes shall be included as one or more categories within a combined “Dioramas & Vignettes” division.

If there is a reasonable quantity of vignette entries which differ in genre (aerospace, figure, ships, etc.) then genre-specific vignette category splits may be created on the day of the event, at the discretion of the CAPCON 2023 committee on the recommendation of the Head Judge.

X-01 Collections

A Collection is any group of five (5) or more models in which there is a relationship between the models. A Collection is a single, standalone entry which must be displayed together in the Collection category area; the individual models cannot also be entered into different, separate categories.

Example of collection related by TYPE:
Different variants of North American P-51 Mustang aircraft: P-51B, P-51C, P-51D, P-51K, XP-51F

Example of collection related by THEME:
Vehicles from Star Wars movies: Rebel snowspeeder, Jawa sandcrawler, Imperial AT-AT walker, X-wing fighter, Imperial Star Destroyer

X-02 Great EGGspectations

The Great EGGspectations category for 'egg-stylized' models such as egg-planes, egg-armour, egg-ships, and other egg-craft. Not intended for overtly 'caricature' models, such as "Weirdo" or "Rat Fink" style kits.

Eligible:

Commercially-available 'egg-stylized' or 'kid-oriented' models: plane, ship, tank, spacecraft, and others – primarly offered by Hasegawa, Fujimi, Tiger Models, Meng, etc. Does not have to be OOB (out-of-box), modification/updating is allowed.

NOT eligible:

Overtly caricature or 'skewed' models – for example, "Weirdo" stylized kits (by Revell, Monogram) or similar – are not eligible.

Single model entries only; dioramas or collections are not eligible.
Entries in this category are eligible only for the following overall awards: Best of Show – Judges' Choice, People's Choice, and Best Canadian Subject.

(Entrants may contact CAPCON beforehand to inquire if their prospective entries are eligible.)

Canadian War Museum Award
Prix du Musée canadien de la guerre

Objective:
To recognize the most faithful and/or high-quality model of an artifact in the Canadian War Museum collection.

Submission Criteria:
Entrants must clearly identify the War Museum artifact their model represents with a photograph:

  • Of the artifact on public display — include the artifact name, exact location and date the photograph was taken;
  • From an online search of the public collections; or
  • From the Museum’s online exhibitions (include the collection number if available).

Models that are in the Museum’s collection (e.g., models of aerospace, ships, etc.) are eligible as artifacts.

Entrants are encouraged to include an interpretive label in English or French.

  • de l’artefact présenté au public, indiquant le nom de l’artefact, son emplacement et la date à laquelle la photographie a été prise;
  • provenant d’une recherche en ligne dans les collections publiques;
